Be sure it's not wrapped
in ribbons and fine paper. Make
it gold, or tall, make it large,
or strong, handsome, charming,
better, brand new, and smart
enough to make me laugh. Leave it
where I can see it and find it
to watch for it to wait for it; lay in bed
and wonder over it. A moment asleep
and there it is. Close my eyes long
enough: forget what’s expected
what’s safe what’s sound.
