A Perfect Pitch

Throwing under-handed
his fastball started curving
over home plate
so I swung at the pitch
and bought the bat for my son
which was too heavy for him
in his first little league season
now just ended with zero hits
and a dad who has to work harder
at the error his ego made
thinking it could stare down
a Cy Young salesman
at the sporting goods store.

Rooting for Fixing Climate Change

The bottom branch of a sick white pine
swings back and forth in the breeze
low over the parched ground
like it was a dowsing rod
searching for water where
the tree might send its roots
to stop its green needles
from turning brown.
