Boy and Jelly Roll

Boy and Jelly Roll photo

Schoolbus comes by beepin’.  The two of them are down on the riverbank, idling; their calico van sits arch-above.

Jelly Roll is a dark man; Boy is blue.

Jelly Roll makes love to a stone saxophone.  Boy tells him he can’t play that thing, he ain’t skilled, he is not of the righteous type, for music is life and life is harder than anything Jelly Roll might ever know about.  Boy’s got blonde hair and blue skin.  Jelly Roll kisses him on the head and tells him to listen out real good.  Storm’s raging up.

Boy claps along with the thunder.
