Short Flight/Long Drive Books

Announcing Hobart’s First Annual Mini Book Contest to kick off our new minibook series Short Flight/Long Drive Books, edited by Elizabeth Ellen.

* Submissions should be between 15,000 and 35,000 words and in the form of diary entries (journal entries for those who find the word diary too “girly”). Entries may be completely made up (fiction!) or entirely and utterly true (nonfiction!). The choice, dear writer, is yours. They should, however, be of interest to someone other than just the author (i.e., the thousand or more readers we hope will one day pick up your book, not to mention the editors of Hobart).

* There is a $20 entry fee and a (cash!) prize of $500 in addition to publication.
Deadline is December 31st, 2005. Also, with your entry fee, all entrans will receive a free copy of the winning minibook or a 1 year (2 issue) subscription to Hobart. Please specify which you would prefer.

* All submissions will be read blind. As such, do not include your name or contact info anywhere on your submission. Please include, either in your email or as a cover letter, something stating your name, story title, and contact info but we do not need any other cover information.

We're working on a better system as you read this but for now, make your payment via Paypal:

and send your story to:
contest@hobartpulp.com

or,
send your story and a check or money order, made payable to Hobart, to:

Hobart
"Minibook" Contest
PO Box 1658
Ann Arbor, MI 48103

Please, please follow the guidelines, of which there are really only three and the first two are at least somewhat flexible (unless you ask for an exception to be made, in which case there will be no flexibility):

- between 15,000 and 35,000 words
- in the form of diary/journal entries
- do not include your name anywhere on your submission. include a cover letter but only in that we need something connecting your name and your story. we don't need to know your previous credits, or where you did or didn't go to school, or whether or not your submission is fiction or nonfiction or, anything else you think we might want to know

Thank you.
